Emergency and future planning

What’s a future plan?

Future or anticipatory planning means making longer-term plans for a cared-for individual for when you can no longer provide care because of:

  • illness
  • old age
  • a change in circumstances
  • death

Future plans are more in-depth than emergency plans. The people involved in creating the plan are:

  • the carer
  • the cared-for person
  • relevant family members, friends and professionals

Your wishes and preferences and those of the person you care for should be taken into account. It’s a process which should be developed over time.
