Young carers and young adult carers

Overview

How to know if you’re a young carer

Under the Carers (Scotland) Act a young carer is anyone who provides care (or intends to provide care) for someone and is either:

  • under 18
  • 18 and still in school

Often the person you’re caring for is a family member or friend. They may need support due to:

  • a disability
  • mental health condition
  • substance misuse
  • old age

You’ll probably be doing jobs around the house that an adult would do. You might be giving your relative or friend emotional support too.
