Care homes

Getting a place in a care home

Ask your local council’s social care department for an assessment of your care needs.

The social care department can help you to find a care home even if you plan to fund your own place.

You’ll get a list of suitable care homes and help to arrange trial visits.

You should have a choice of different care homes, but the following can limit your options:

  • the availability of suitable accommodation in relation to your assessed needs
  • whether the cost to the local council (if it’s paying towards your care) is more than it usually pays
  • whether accommodation is available
  • if the care home is willing to provide accommodation
