Care homes

Moving to a care home in a different area of Scotland

If you’re eligible for financial help, your current local council  the one that’s assessed your care needs  is responsible for funding your new care home, but you’ll have to meet the criteria of the new local authority area.

Your current council should pay either the usual limit for their area, or the usual limit for the local authority you’re moving to, whichever is the lowest.

Read the Scottish Government’s guidance to local authorities on how they should fund accommodation and services between different areas.

Age Scotland gives older people information and advice, phone their helpline on 0800 12 44 222.
