Carers’ health and wellbeing

Caring for your health

It’s important that you’re fit and well enough to care for someone else.

Sleep

Sleep is vital for our physical and mental health. You might find it difficult to have a good night’s sleep, especially if the person you care for needs help during the night.

Caring for someone brings extra pressures which might disturb your sleep, like money worries or emotional concerns.

Talk to your GP if you’re having trouble sleeping.

Eating well

Eating a balanced diet is essential to provide your body with all the nutrients it needs. This keeps your body strong and gives you energy to provide the best care for the person you’re caring for and yourself.

Exercise

Exercise is another vital ingredient for good physical and mental health. It makes you feel better, reduces health risks and helps you deal with stress.

Flu jabs

You need to protect yourself and the person you care for from seasonal flu, as flu will prevent you from being able to care. All carers and young carers are eligible to receive the free seasonal flu vaccine every winter.

Caring for your back

Most of us will have a sore back at some point in our lives. As a carer, you’re more likely to be affected, especially when moving and lifting objects and people. You can keep your back in good shape if you know how to protect it.
