Young carers and young adult carers

From young carer to adult carer

When you turn 18 and leave education, you will move from being a young carer to an adult carer.

Not all carer services use the term young adult carer to describe young carers who are over 18. Whether they do or not, there is still support for you during this time.

When you’re over 18 you still have the right to:

  • information
  • support
  • a break as a carer

Young Carer Statement to Adult Carer Support Plan

If you have a Young Carer Statement all the recommendations and support should stay in place until you have had a chance to complete an Adult Carer Support Plan.

The Adult Carer Support Plan will also make sure you have the support you need.

The plan includes a transition bundle so that you can get extra support during your move from young carer to adult carer (before you turn 19).

This bundle consists of:

  • information about your rights as an adult unpaid carer
  • £100 voucher for Love2Shop

Young carers from 16 to 18 can get £50 if they open a ScotWest credit union savings account.

Finding support

You can still get support tailored to your needs when you move from a young carer to an adult carer.

Some carers’ services provide groups for people to make friends and get support. They may also be able to signpost you to other services.

Support may also be available through your school, college, university or work.

If you would like to know if there is a carer centre in your area, phone Carers Trust Scotland on 0300 772 7701.
