Young carers and young adult carers

Young adult carers

If you’re between 18 and 25, and are a carer, this time in your life can present particular challenges.

You’ll probably be juggling:

  • education, employment or training
  • your caring responsibilities
  • making decisions about what you want to do with your life and how your caring role could fit into this

Challenges

Caring for a relative can be emotionally challenging. Sometimes it’s hard to find someone to talk to who understands what you’re going through.

It may seem that some service providers you come across aren’t made for people of your age group. You may just have started looking after someone and don’t know where to turn. You’ve maybe lost support from a young carers’ service because you’re now 18.

Finding support

Despite all this, you can still get support which is tailored to your specific needs. Some carers’ services provide groups for young adult carers to make friends and get support from each other or they may be able to signpost you to other services.

Support may also be available through your school, college or university.

If you would like to know if there is Young Adult Carer service in your area please phone Carers Trust Scotland on 0300 772 7701.
